
Children will build and use arrays to develop their knowledge of the link between repeated addition and multiplication and to explore commutativity. They will use vocabulary linked to multiplication such as ‘lots of’ and ‘groups of’. This lesson includes a teaching presentation accompanied by differentiated activities with a range of fluency, reasoning and problem-solving questions, as well as 3 sets of extra fluency questions.
National Curriculum Objectives: Mathematics Year 3: • Show that multiplication of two numbers can be done in any order (commutative) and division on one number by another cannot (Y2) • Write and calculate mathematical statements for multiplication and division using the multiplication tables that they know, including for 2-digit numbers times 1-digit numbers, using mental and progressing to formal written methods
