Description

Children will make connections between the 2, 4 and 8 times-tables. They link multiplying by 4 to doubling then doubling again and multiplying by 8 to doubling three times. They should also understand that dividing by 4 is the same as halving then halving again and dividing by 8 is the same as halving three times. Children will also use their knowledge of known facts to support them. This lesson includes a teaching presentation accompanied by differentiated activities with a range of fluency, reasoning and problem-solving questions, as well as 3 sets of extra fluency questions.

National Curriculum Objectives: Mathematics Year 3: • Recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 3, 4 and 8 multiplication tables • Write and calculate mathematical statements for multiplication and division using the multiplication tables that they know, including for 2-digit numbers times 1-digit numbers, using mental and progressing to formal written methods
