Description

Prior to this objective, teachers should assess the suggested morphemes for a persuasive letter using the provided materials. If learning is secure, proceed to the suffix -en objective; otherwise, refer to resources for additional support on the suffixes -ed and -ing stressed vowels objective. In this objective, children will learn that suffix -en is a vowel suffix that adds a sense of an “make or made of” to the bases or stems it combines with. They will also learn that it can sometimes signal a past participle. Over three 20-minute lessons, they will:

Combine suffix -en with a range of bases and stems, examining the different senses the suffix can bring to new words Learn about the etymology of new bases and stems Revisit suffixing rules Use a matrix and word webs to explore building words
