In this objective children will develop their understanding of morphology and using morphemes to build new words. This objective is for pupils returning after at least one academic year of studying Spelling with Grammarsaurus. Pupils new to the scheme should complete Level 1 Introduction to morphology only.

Over two 20-30 minute lessons, they will:

• Recap key terminology such as base, root, prefix, suffix, stem and more
• Recap how the morpheme icons and flashcards support spelling throughout the Grammarsaurus spelling scheme
• Be introduced to new terminology that will be covered in upcoming lessons: free base, bound base, connecting vowel letter (CVL), alternate bases and assimilated prefixes
• Develop understanding of recognising bases and affixes within words
• Develop understanding of recognising a base in words where the final silent e has been dropped (such as base ‘move’ in the word ‘moving’)
• Build a word family for base ‘run’ and practise using suffixing rules
