In this objective, children will develop their understanding of morphology and using morphemes to build new words. These lessons are for pupils returning to morphology in Year 3 and 4.

Over two 20-30 minute lessons, they will:

• Recap key terminology such as base, root, prefix, suffix, stem and more
• Recap how the morpheme icons and flashcards support spelling throughout the Grammarsaurus spelling scheme
• Be introduced to new terminology that will be covered in upcoming lessons: free base, bound base, connecting vowel letter (CVL), alternate bases and assimilated prefixes
• Develop understanding of recognising bases and affixes within words
• Develop understanding of recognising a base in words where the final silent e has been dropped (such as base ‘move’ in the word ‘moving’)
• Build a word family for base ‘run’ and practise using suffixing rules
