In this lesson, children will use balance scales to compare the mass of two or more objects. They will build on their prior knowledge of mass, understanding that when the scales are balanced, the objects have the same mass and will use the same non-standard unit to accurately compare the mass of the objects. Children will then begin to order two or more objects by mass and use the symbols <, = or >. This lesson includes a teaching presentation accompanied by additional fluency questions, differentiated practical fluency activities, differentiated reasoning and problem-solving challenge cards.
