In this lesson, children use their knowledge of addition and subtraction to answer multi-step problems in different contexts. There is a teaching presentation accompanied by differentiated activities with a range of fluency, reasoning and problem-solving questions.

National Curriculum Objectives:
Mathematics Year 5: 

add and subtract whole numbers with more than 4 digits, including using formal written methods (columnar addition and subtraction)
use rounding to check answers to calculations and determine, in the context of a problem, levels of accuracy
solve addition and subtraction multi-step problems in contexts, deciding which operations and methods to use and why.

There are three levels of differentiation in this pack: ‘working towards,’ ‘expected’ and ‘greater depth’.
