We analysed every KS2 SATs spelling paper and discovered that the same morphemes appear again and again. To help teachers focus on what matters most, we have created a baseline assessment based on the most common morphemes tested in Year 6 SATs. This resource allows you to quickly check your pupils’ understanding of these high-frequency morphemes, helping you identify gaps and prioritise teaching before SATs. Why focus on morphemes? Strong spellers don’t simply memorise whole words. They understand how words are constructed from meaningful units (morphemes) and how those units combine. By developing pupils’ morphemic awareness, they can apply their understanding to spell many more words confidently and accurately. For example: writing = write + ing running = run + ing married = marry + ed Understanding the base and suffix helps pupils apply this knowledge across a wide range of words. What’s included? This resource includes: • Pupil baseline assessment covering the most common morphemes in SATs spelling papers • Teacher transcript for accurate delivery • Clear opportunities for word analysis to support morphemic awareness How to use this resource Use the baseline to: • Identify which morphemes pupils are secure with • Spot gaps in morphemic understanding • Plan targeted spelling teaching before SATs This resource is ideal for Year 6 teachers who want to focus on the morphemes most likely to appear in SATs spelling tests....
