
In this objective, children will learn that suffix -ance is a vowel suffix of Latin origin that can add a sense of a “state, quality or concept” to bases and stems it combines with to form new words, which are usually abstract nouns.
Over four 20-minute lessons, they will: • Build on learning about suffix -ant
• Combine suffix -ance with a range of bases and stems • Revisit suffixing rules • Learn about word families that take suffix -ance • Use a matrix and word webs to explore a variety of words • Learn about the etymology of new bases and stems • Solve word sums • Build word families • Learn that bases and stems ending in suffix -ate usually take suffix -ance as well as suffix -ant
• Recognise that not all bases which take suffix -ant will form a recognisable word when combined with suffix -ance (and vice versa)
