
In this objective, children will learn that suffix -ery is a vowel suffix of Latin origin and can often combine with bases and stems to add a sense of “a place for or collection of”. They will also learn that it can add a sense of “state, condition or quality” to some words. Over three 20-minute lessons, they will:
Combine suffix -ery with bases and stems to build a range of words and solve words sums Learn about the etymology of new bases and stems Revisit suffixing rules Use matrices to explore words with base cook and base trick Use morphemes to compare how words are formed such as stationary and stationery. Recognise that in some words, the suffix -ery can be broken down into more than one morpheme. In these words, they will learn to identify that the agent suffix -er combines with the suffix -y indicating “state, condition or quality”. (This suffixal construction can be identified in words such as bakery, jewellery and robbery.)
