Y2: Place Value of Spelling
Y2’s writing journey starts with the Place Value of Spelling. The process begins with the delivery of assessment materials from the Assessment Pack at the start of the Autumn term.
Following the assessment, the spelling scheme objectives are introduced. These objectives guide children in applying their spelling skills within the Suggested Writing Unit for the term.
Y3 & Y4: Revisiting and Expanding on Y2 Objectives
In Y3 and Y4, the journey encourages teachers to revisit previous Y2 objectives from the Place Value of Spelling to ensure foundational knowledge is secure.
· Teachers use Place Value of Spelling assessment materials to confirm secure understanding. Professional judgment is used to ensure students are ready to progress to their next Year Group Objective.
Once previous objectives are reviewed and secure, new objectives for the year group are delivered using materials in the Year Group Objectives.
Writing Unit Application
In both Y3 and Y4, the Suggested Writing Unit integrates both new and previously covered spelling objectives from the Place Value of Spelling (Y2) within each writing genre.
Buffer Weeks and Matrix Application
· Throughout Y3 and Y4, buffer weeks are built in to allow teachers to adjust their time as needed to ensure all objectives are covered each term, including those revisited from Y2
Dedicated time is allocated for Matrix Application, giving children the opportunity to explore and build words confidently using morphemes they understand. This creates an opportunity for children to experiment with a variety of words and strengthens their spelling application.
The Writing Journey ensures a clear progression through spelling objectives, encourages the application of learned skills, and allows flexibility for assessment and review.
