In this lesson, children build on their previous learning of column multiplication. They will multiply up to 3-digits by 2-digits and apply this in a variety of contexts in word problems and multi-step problems. There is a teaching presentation accompanied by differentiated activities with a range of fluency, reasoning and problem-solving questions.
National Curriculum objectives
· multiply multi-digit numbers up to 4 digits by a two-digit whole number using the formal written method of long multiplication
· perform mental calculations, including with mixed operations and large numbers
· identify common factors, common multiples and prime numbers
· solve problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
· use estimation to check answers to calculations and determine, in the context of a problem, an appropriate degree of accuracy
