In this lesson, children explore the structure of numbers, looking at how many hundreds, tens and ones it’s made up of. They explore place value counters and describe numbers as being made of a collection of counters (147 is made up of 1 hundred counter, 4 ten counters and 7 one counters) and relate this to 1 hundred, 4 tens and 7 ones. This lesson includes a teaching presentation accompanied by differentiated activities with a range of fluency, reasoning and problem-solving questions, as well as 3 sets of extra fluency questions.
