In this lesson, children learn the addition symbol (+) and explore using it to represent combining two parts, as well as using the equals (=) sign to represent the equivalence with the whole. They focus on simple addition number sentences, relating the written sentence to the language describing it. 5 + 4 = 9, 5 sweets plus 4 sweets is equal to 9 sweets. They use First, Then, Now stories to explore this. This lesson includes a teaching presentation accompanied by differentiated activities with a range of fluency, reasoning and problem-solving questions, as well as 3 sets of extra fluency questions.
