This comprehension crusher reading scheme pack includes narratives, one focusing on the Hindu story of Lord Krishna and Sudama and the other an Islamic tale focused on a spoilt prince and a wise sheikh. The first narrative, that accompanies the teaching slides, is a detailed text which beautifully describes and explores the friendship between the impoverished Sudama and the wealthy Krishna. It has been written to meet the Year 6 expected standard and comes with three sets of comprehension questions, based on two curriculum content domains (retrieval and inference). The teaching slides provided, along with the questions sets, allow for in depth practice of each individual question type.
The second model text is also a narrative with a moral, called ‘The Perfect Banquet’ exploring the downfalls of wealth and hubris. This text has been written to meet the Year 4 expected standard and is accompanied by one set of comprehension questions, which includes the three styles of question, previously practised. This provides an ‘unseen’ text and additional questions to practise these same skills independently. The answers to all questions are included.

Year 4: Pupils should be taught to answer a variety of comprehension questions across a mixture of genres. This text focuses on developing vocabulary, retrieval and summarising.
