The first poem, that accompanies the teaching slides, is a powerful depiction of racism in Britain. Zephaniah describes prejudice and discrimination against himself and people of the Black community. It meets the Year 5 expected standard and comes with two sets of comprehension questions, based on two curriculum content domains (vocabulary and inference). The teaching slides provided, along with the questions sets, allow for in depth practice of each individual question type.
The second model text is also a poem, focusing on the different races of people living in Britain. This text also meets the Year 4 expected standard and is accompanied by one set of comprehension questions, which includes the two styles of question, previously practised. This provides an ‘unseen’ text and additional questions to practise these same skills independently. The answers to all questions are included.
