This comprehension crusher reading scheme pack includes one information report entitled ‘Black Britons’ and one non-chronological report entitled ‘The Remarkable Roman Army’. The first text, that accompanies the teaching slides, is a detailed and wide-spanning information report, detailing the lives of famous black Britons from the Roman period up until the present day. This text discusses themes of slavery, discrimination and perseverance. It meets the Year 4 expected standard and comes with three sets of comprehension questions, based on three curriculum content domains (vocabulary, retrieval and summary). The teaching slides provided, along with the questions sets, allow for in depth practice of each individual question type. The second model text is a non-chronological report bursting with facts about the organisation of the Roman army. It details how the army was organised, the training soldiers’ endured and their attire. This part also meets the Year 4 expected standard and is accompanied by one set of comprehension questions, which includes the three styles of question, previously practised. This provides an ‘unseen’ text and additional questions to practise these same skills independently.
