Step 1: Preparation
To begin the assessment, you will need:
Teacher Transcript: This will be read aloud to the students.
Pupil Response Sheet: One sheet per child for recording their answers.
Excel Document: A tool for tracking results, which can be used to quickly analyse overall performance and identify trends.
Step 2: Administering the assessment
Distribute materials: Give each student a Pupil Response Sheet. Make sure they know where to write their answers.
Read the sentences aloud: As you read each sentence from the Teacher Transcript, allow students enough time to fill in the correct word from the list. Encourage them to listen carefully and focus on spelling, not just guessing the word based on meaning.
Step 3: Collect and record results
Once the students have completed the assessment:
Collect the Pupil Response Sheets.
Record results in the Excel Document: Input the answers for each student in the Excel document to track how well they performed with each word.
Step 4: Analyse results
If the majority show low attainment:
The morpheme should be revisited and then reassessed
If the majority perform well:
The class can likely move forward to the next objective in the spelling journey.
