In this objective, children will learn how to add the suffix -able/-ible to a base word to form new words. Over four 20-minute lessons, they will:
· Learn a range of words that the suffix -able can be added to
· Learn the spelling rules:
o just add the suffix -able
o if the base ends in CVC, double the consonant and add -able
o if the base ends in e drop the e and add -able (with exceptions)
o if the base ends in y, turn it to an i and add -able
· Learn how to add the suffix -ible to bound base words
· Explore the etymology of some bound base words
· Build new words using the suffix -able/-ible and other morphemes (un-, re- and -ly)
· Reinforce learning with practical games
