In this lesson, children convert between different units of measurement for length (mm, cm, m and km). Children use their prior knowledge of multiplying and dividing by 10,100 and 1000 to convert between the different measurements. There is a teaching presentation accompanied by differentiated activities with a range of fluency, reasoning and problem-solving questions.

Mathematics Year 5:
convert between different units of metric measure (for example, kilometre and metre; centimetre and metre; centimetre and millimetre; gram and kilogram; litre and millilitre)
understand and use approximate equivalences between metric units and common imperial units such as inches, pounds and pints
solve problems involving converting between units of time
use all four operations to solve problems involving measure [for example, length, mass, volume, money] using decimal notation, including scaling.
