In this lesson, children revisit coordinates: last taught in Year 4. Children will read coordinates in brackets and know that the first number represents the x-coordinate and the second number the y-coordinate. This lesson introduces that where the x and y axes meet (0,0) on the grid is called the origin. They will practise reading and plotting points on the coordinate grid, including points that are vertices of 2-D shapes. There is a teaching presentation accompanied by differentiated activities with a range of fluency, reasoning and problem-solving questions.
National Curriculum Objectives: Mathematics Year 5:
Identify, describe and represent the position of a shape following a reflection or translation, using the appropriate language, and know that the shape has not changed.
Pupils recognise and use reflection and translation in a variety of diagrams, including continuing to use a 2-D grid and coordinates in the first quadrant.
