In this lesson, children solve comparison, sum and difference problems using pictograms, tables and bar graphs. They will use addition and subtraction to answer the questions, choosing the most appropriate method. There is a teaching presentation accompanied by differentiated activities with a range of fluency, reasoning and problem-solving questions.

National Curriculum Objectives: Mathematics Year 4:

interpret and present data using bar charts, pictograms and tables
solve one-step and two-step questions [for example, ‘How many more?’ and ‘How many fewer?’] using information presented in scaled bar charts and pictograms and tables.
